Videosyncratic is more than just a video shop - not literally, but spiritually. And not spiritually in a Mel Gibson way, but in a far more spectacular than just a mere video shop way.
The ethos behind Videosyncratic is simple - a good film is a good film. You wouldn't expect to walk into a library and not be able to find the Bible, Dickens, Hemingway, Steinbeck, so how has it become acceptable to walk into a video shop and NOT expect to find The Graduate, Gone With The Wind, Star Wars, Breakfast at Tiffany's...... Police Academy? Why on earth would people want to only rent out a crappy selection of films released in the last six months when there is still a century of bloody brilliant films to catch up on?
The video industry is a weird one, I can't think of another industry which really has dwindled from being an exciting growth area into revolving around one huge single corporation with a couple of crappy chains trying desperately to emulate that corporation's approach. The few independent video shops that remain should be cherished, but are more often deserted outposts of a once great army than commited warriors of the wastelands of film. Which is what we are.
Since our Summertown store opened in 2002 we've amassed a collection of around 10,000 films and that figure swells weekly (the average 'Corporate Express' has around 3,000 units and that includes about 60 copies of each individual title - you do the maths). Yes, we have all of the worthwhile latest releases, we just don't think it's necessary to stock 60 copies of each. We decided to stock 2 or 3 of each and then supplement them with 57 or 58 other individual films of the highest quality.
We have the biggest, most diverse selection of films in Oxford, we hunt high and low to track down all of the long-deleted films you'd half-forgotten about or always wanted to see. We have all of the classics, all of the cults, more martial arts films than you can shake a big pointy stick at, a terrifying quantity of horror flicks a galaxy of sci-fi, a chick flick section that - if watched in it's entirety - would deplete the world's stock of tissues and chocolates down to nothing, and a world cinema section bigger than the national debt of most of the countries we showcase in it.
So, in brief, here's why you should cut up your corporate video card and hightail it over to us right now:
